Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

In this play by Tom Stoppard – one of the most prominent playwrights of contemporary theatre and an advocate of the theatre of the absurd – Hamlet’s story is told from the perspective of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two humble characters in Shakespeare’s tragedy, or people who didn’t say ‘no’ at the right time. Fragments of Shakespeare’s texts are performed, while Ophelia, Polonius and Hamlet himself appear and disappear, and Stoppard’s characters try to understand what their true role is in this confusing, Shakespearean timeline.

The director, Yury Butusov, says he particularly appreciates the poetic quality of this already-classic play. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead aptly addresses the context and hardships of our times. The performance should remind the audience of the lost paradise, the impossibility of human wholeness, harmony and happiness. The illusion of theatre within theatre in Butusov’s production is revealed and reinforced by Marius Nekrošius’ laconic set and costumes with their surprising materials and textures. This is the first staging of the play in a Lithuanian theatre.
