Programme:
Fryderyk Chopin's Preludes, Op. 28; excerpts from George Sand's memoirs Un hiver à Majorque (A Winter in Mallorca)
Pianist Eglė Andrejevaitė and actress Birutė Mar’s music and word programme A Winter in Mallorca is based on twenty-four Preludes by Fryderyk Chopin, Op. 28, a cycle written by the “piano poet” in the Monastery of Valldemossa in Mallorca. Akin to a short musical haiku, they will portray the feelings and states of Chopin and writer George Sand, the composer’s beloved at the time. Chopin, who “put” the prelude on the music pedestal as a consummate improvisation capable of touching the most sensitive strings of the heart, will be “voiced” by pianist Eglė Andrejevaitė’s hands, and Sand will “respond” with excerpts from her memoirs A Winter in Mallorca. In addition to presenting the facts and circumstances of composition of music performed, this programme tells a story of love, tension and passion of two geniuses, contrasted with the experiences of their journey to Mallorca and the difficulties of everyday life.
