Event information

Vilnius University Drama Theatre production The Promised is an in-depth analysis of William Shakespeare’s legendary play Romeo and Juliet. The aim of the production is to uncover new and previously unexamined aspects of the famous play. The performance invites audiences to explore the complex mechanisms of family feuds, rooted in past sins whose consequences affect not only parents but also their children.

In this interpretation, Juliet emerges as a Promise — a figure meant to overcome the centuries-old enmity between the families, yet simultaneously symbolizing an unavoidable tragedy born from deep-seated guilt and misguided choices. Through the characters’ stories, the production examines parent-child relationships, the power of friendship, the significance of authority figures, the complexities of emerging love, and the coming-of-age journey of a young person.

The performance touches on themes that remain relevant across all eras: the dilemma of trust, the consequences of ignoring signs of fate, and the importance of taking responsibility for one’s actions. Each character is not only a victim of tragedy but also a contributor to it — different storylines intertwine into an inevitable drama that prompts reflection on universal values.

In 2025, the Vilnius University Drama Theatre presents The Promised as an invitation to rethink Romeo and Juliet, considering not only the power of love but also the burden of responsibility that we all carry. This production encourages deep and necessary reflection on the past, the present, and the legacy we leave for future generations.

About performer

Vilnius University Drama Theatre, founded alongside the university in 1570, is considered the pioneer of Lithuanian theatre. The first student production staged by this theatre was S. Tucci’s Hercules.

The theatre’s development was significantly influenced by director Vladas Limantas, who revived old traditions and brought together a group of passionate creators. Later, Marija Misiūnaitė introduced a direction of subtle psychological theatricality. In 1990, an alternative troupe Minimum was established, performing for 15 years in the L. Stuoka-Gucevičius courtyard. Since 2005, the theatre has been based in the Vilnius University theatre hall.

In 2021, the theatre embarked on a new chapter under the direction of Felicija Feiferė.

Throughout its history, the theatre has been home to many renowned Lithuanian artists, including Juozas Erlickas, Dalia Michelevičiūtė, Vanda Juknaitė, and Marijus Žiedas.
