The Mstislav Rostropovich Charity and Support Foundation “Help for Lithuanian Children” was established on 12 April 2003 on the Maestro’s personal initiative. From the Foundation’s inception until his death, Maestro Rostropovich served as its President, was actively involved in concerts and in teaching children of exceptional talent. In 2007, Elena Rostropovich, the Maestro’s daughter, became President of the Foundation. Today, various Lithuanian companies and the personal funds of businessmen and other people help to continue the activities started by the Maestro.
The Foundation supports children who are particularly gifted in music, science and sports. It also provides assistance to children with rare and difficult-to-treat diseases, donating necessary equipment and medications to the VU Santara Children’s Hospital. Many of the exceptional children supported by the Foundation have not only been able to fulfil their dreams but have also been able to grace the world’s major stages, perform with world-famous orchestras and be recognised among the best. Each year, the Foundation arranges a scholarship competition and organises performances by the young musicians who have won scholarships.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Foundation in Lithuania, alumni and scholarship holders present a programme combining solo performances and chamber ensemble appearances.
