About performer
Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) was a renowned Finnish composer, whose major works include symphonic poems and a cycle of five symphonies. The songs in the programme by Agnė Buškevičiūtė-Tumalavičienė and Darius Mažintas are close to poems in their development. In addition to individual songs, there will be several pieces from the cycles "Random Life" and "Dreams". "The Northern Lights programme will conclude with the Sad Waltz, one of Sibelius' most famous and most frequently performed songs, later developed and made famous as a symphonic poem, in which the noble sadness of bereavement is transformed into melodramatic apotheosis.
Basia Rubin (1898-1985) was a composer of almost unknown Jewish origin. Her family - her parents, seven sisters and a brother - lived in the town of Dolginovo in Belarus. Basia was a dentist, but devoted her spare time to music. She wrote more than 200 works, mostly vocal lyrics and even an opera for children. Many of her songs were based on her own Yiddish lyrics. In the songs of Rubin, we will hear the longing of deceased family members. Some songs can be interpreted as a requiem, others as an anthem of survival.
