A musical flash from the South – right here at the Christopher Festival! A group whose melodies carry you away like the ocean waves, and whose rhythms pour over you like a tropical rain shower. These are travellers in the world music scene, inviting you on an odyssey from Brazil to Angola, from Cabo Verde to the shores of the Mediterranean.

Ayom are six charismatic musicians from four different countries. At the forefront is the fiery Brazilian singer and percussionist Jabu Morales. The group brings their exclusive Afro-Brazilian sound to Vilnius, peppered with the flavours of the Mediterranean Sea region.

“Ayom is not only the name of our group. It is a force we feel in every beat of our drums, each breath of the accordion, in each song that is born of centuries-old traditions and our own stories. Ayom is a mythical being teaching us to play and sing, to unite people through sound. Our music is happy, full of life, inspiring and engaging. Before you know it, you'll be up and dancing”, says Morales about their upcoming performance.

Indeed, with their exotic sound and energy the musicians enchant the public and professionals alike: Ayom was recognised as Best Group in the Songlines Music Awards (2021), while their debut album made it onto the list of best world music albums, compiled by Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

So, get ready for some fun and adventure, and an evening filled with the spirit of Ayom!

Programme features Sa.Li.Va album

About performer

Rooted in Afro-Brazilian music, at the same time cosmopolitan, virtuosic, witty and warm-hearted: this is the fascinating four-nation sextet around the charismatic Brazilian singer Jabu Morales, Italian accordionist Alberto Becucci and greek-Italian percussionist Timoteo Grignani, which was named best band of 2021 by the British trade magazine Songlines.

Ayom are musical seafarers who cross the Black Atlantic from Brazil to Angola and Cape Verde while retaining a distinct Mediterranean identity. Their music is a mixture of Brazilian, tropical, Afrolatin and Afrolusitanian sounds, played with irresistible swing. A tropical sun that penetrates grey clouds, interspersed with the cosmopolitan sounds of Lisbon and Barcelona.

The band name Ayom refers to the “Lord of Music” that in Afro-Brazilian mythology (Candomblè) lives in the drum and taught humans how to make music and sing. Ayom combine century old traditions with the black and rhythmic language of Lusophone cultures and take their audience on a hot-stepping, spiritual voyage across the African diaspora.

They celebrate their nomadic, profound, provocative and danceable musicality, peacefully mixing tradition and modernity, masculine and feminine, poetry and energy, joie de vivre and political statement.
