Joël Pommerat
The Reunification of the Two Koreas
Critics often describe playwright Joël Pommerat as a discoverer of an original theatrical language. He is compared to an alchemist of theatre, making novel interactions between text, stage space, plot, and imagery. His 2013 play, The Reunification of the Two Koreas, consists of 20 separate scenes – self-contained dramatic episodes – 15 of which are included in the performance. Through them, the author presents a panoramic exploration of romantic relationships. As Pommerat himself put it, “Intimate relationships lead to blindness due to their intensity.” At its core, the play is not so much about love itself but rather about its impossibility.
With subtlety and precision, it raises seemingly ordinary yet profoundly non-rhetorical questions: What is love? Where does it come from? How can it be understood or grasped? The fragmented, diverse, and seemingly unrelated situations attempt to unravel this mystery – to decipher an enigmatic code, uncover the essence of a long-guarded secret, and find the single word that could define love. Yet this mission is ultimately futile, as love is understood, felt, and experienced differently by each of us.

About the festival
