The program was born from the residency initiative Tarp tylos (Between Silence), led by the Lithuanian ensemble Twenty Fingers Duo—Lora Kmieliauskaitė and Arnas Kmieliauskas. This residency is designed to foster the ensemble’s, and by extension Lithuania's, contemporary music connections and creative collaborations with ensembles and composers from Europe and beyond.

This year, the residency invited GBSR Duo—George Barton (percussion) and Siwan Rhys (keyboard)—an ensemble from the United Kingdom known for their dynamism and experimental approach. Together with Twenty Fingers Duo, they will develop and present at the festival works by two composers: Julius Aglinskas and Lawrence Dunn.

GLOBAL ISSUES

As the world stands on the brink of the widespread dominance of artificial intelligence, which may reshape societal structures, with scientists warning that we are nearing the "red line" beyond which the damage to the climate will be irreversible, with the global population surpassing 8 billion, and the Doomsday Clock ticking closer to midnight, it is clear that global challenges could alter our future and everyday lives at any moment. This year's Music Autumn festival, from an anthropological perspective, explores issues that are relevant to the entire world or specific regions. How do we see, respond to, and understand these threats and the future of humanity? And why, despite being aware of the magnitude of these dangers, are we unable to unite to save the world?

About performer

TWENTY FINFERS DUO (Lithuania)

Lora Kmieliauskaitė – violin
Arnas Kmieliauskas – violoncello

The contemporary music ensemble was founded in Vilnius in 2016, by sister and brother violinist Lora Kmieliauskaitė and cellist Arnas Kmieliauskas. After graduating in classical music and becoming laureates of numerous international and national competitions, the members of Twenty Fingers Duo actively participate in and initiate contemporary art projects, with a strong focus on collaboration with artists from other fields. The main task of the ensemble's musical activity is to foster and promote Lithuanian music, while the gamut of their activities ranges from standard concert appearances and interdisciplinary performances to collaborations in contemporary opera, theatre, dance, and film productions.

BGSR DUO (United Kingdom)

George Barton – percussion
Siwan Rhys – piano

Ensemble combines two of the UK's finest young contemporary chamber instrumentalists. The duo has built its reputation on a combination of exceptional interpretations of the existing piano-percussion repertoire, committed performances of ambitious new commissions, and inventive collaborations. Known for their fearless, intense and boundary-crossing performances, GBSR's work ranges from the twentieth-century modernism of Stockhausen and Ustvolskaya to music by Brian Eno and Aphex Twin; from the exquisite delicacy of composers like Morton Feldman, Eva-Maria Houben and Barbara Monk Feldman to the experimental and cross-genre work of Oliver Leith, CHAINES and Angharad Davies.
