GAMES FOR WINDS | LITHUANIAN COMPOSERS IN FOCUS | VILNIUS WINDS 2024

In recent years, the LSPO has commissioned and initiated more than fifteen new pieces from Lithuanian composers. These telling figures show not only the orchestra’s consistent commitment to promoting the music by Lithuanian composers, but also its ambition to develop a new repertoire for the orchestra. The orchestra’s recent collaborations include composers Žibuoklė Martinaitytė, Algirdas Martinitis, Šarūnas Nakas, Zita Bružaitė and other well-known Lithuanian composers. Continuing the tradition, this year we present a premiere by composer and conductor Vykintas Baltakas, an active curator of contemporary music programmes; the opus Jeux de Vents by Veronika Krausas, a Canadian composer of Lithuanian descent based in Los Angeles; works specially commissioned for the young generation – swells, pines, rustles by LSPO composer Dominykas Digimas, and cooking, cleaning, creating by Rita Mačiliūnaitė; and the earlier composed Karūna, a composition for large wind orchestra and percussion by composer, essayist, and multimedia artist, Šarūnas Nakas.
