Despoina Sarafidou „CASSANDRA“, a stand-up tragedy in broken English (Greece)

Using the mythical Cassandra of Greek tragedy, playwright Sergio Blanco creates a one woman tour-de-force.

Kassandra, wearing red patent-leather boots, reveals her Odyssey. Sex, war, and power, winners and losers. In her off-kilter immigrant English, she talks about our own search for meaning and hope. Tears and laughter, sarcasm and humour, Euripides and Bugs Bunny. The distance between myth and reality, performer  and audience, space and text collapses.

Kassandra is performed in broken English by a protagonist who is simultaneously the Cassandra of ancient Greek tragedy and a transsexual immigrant prostitute in any city of the 21st century – an exile in her own body, a strager in every country.In Greek mythology, Cassandra was the daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy. Her beauty caused Apollo to grant her the gift of prophecy. When she did not return his love, Apollo placed a curse on her so that no one would ever believe her predictions. She predicted Troy’s destruction.

In the Greek language, Cassandra signifies the messenger bearing dreadful news.

In this way, the voice of Blanco’s Kassandra becomes the symbol of the contemporary, not only Greek but also global, crisis.

Kassandra was initially staged in Athens, at the bar Anthropos, it has participated in more than 25 festivals in Greece and abroad (Albania, Switzerland, Kosova, North Macedonia, Czech Republic,

Bulgaria, Spain, Turkey, Slovakia, Germany, Luxembourg, Romania).

Актриса одновременно играет Кассандру из древнегреческих трагедий и проститутку-эмигрантку в любом городе 21 века - изгнанницу в своем теле и чужую в каждой стране.

Кассандра, обутая в  красные лакированные сапоги, рассказывает свою Одиссею. Секс, война и власть, победители и проигравшие. На английском языке экспатриантов она говорит о нашем собственном поиске смысла и надежды. Слезы и смех, сарказм и юмор, рушится дистанция между мифом и реальностью, исполнителем и зрителем, пространством и текстом.
