About performer

The saxophone quartet Arcis, founded in Munich, belongs to a new generation of chamber ensembles that combines the tradition of the classical concert with innovative approaches to performance. The four musicians focus not only on musical interpretation but also on the entire concert concept — from programme design to stage presentation. Through carefully crafted performances, unexpected repertoire choices, and active international engagement, the quartet has become one of the most distinctive ensembles on the European music scene.

In the programme Nightclub Chronicles, the performers turn to music shaped by the rhythm of the city, the influence of different cultures, and the stylistic transformations of the 20th century. In Frank Zappa’s works, music meets rock, jazz, and experimental ideas, while Ástor Piazzolla’s tango nuevo* tradition brought the energy and melancholy of Buenos Aires tango into the concert hall. In their performances, the members of Arcis combine precision and virtuosity with theatrical expression, creating a vibrant connection with the audience. Their concerts remind us that chamber music does not necessarily mean a restrained atmosphere — it can be dynamic, unpredictable, and closely connected to today’s listeners.

* Tango Nuevo (Spanish for “New Tango”) is a progressive movement that emerged in the 1980s. It fundamentally transformed traditional Argentine tango by incorporating elements of contemporary dance, jazz, and classical music.
