Throughout the year, the Sax Colossus concert series at Jazz Cellar 11 has taken audiences on a musical journey through the legacy of five legendary saxophonists. Each concert was dedicated to a different jazz giant, exploring their distinctive sound, compositions and unique approach to improvisation. And now, as the year draws to a close, we have decided to bring together the very best of these musical journeys in one special program!
From the powerful, full-bodied sound of Coleman Hawkins, who helped establish the tenor saxophone as one of the defining instruments of jazz, to the elegant, relaxed and effortless swing of Dexter Gordon. From the subtle, melodic phrasing of Hank Mobley to the sophisticated compositions and harmonic imagination of Benny Golson. And, of course, Sonny Rollins — a master of boundless improvisational creativity, rhythmic freedom and musical humour.
All five share the same instrument — the tenor saxophone — yet each created such a distinctive musical world that it is sometimes hard to believe they were all playing the very same instrument.
On stage, you will once again meet the charismatic, highly accomplished and irresistibly swinging Sax Colossus ensemble, already well known to Jazz Cellar 11 audiences from their musical adventures throughout the year.
There is Pavel Arakelian, stepping into the musical shoes of all five saxophone legends. Dmitrij Golovanov, an outstanding pianist who continues to demonstrate his remarkable versatility and impeccable musical taste. And double bassist Aliaksei Kryshtal, whose virtuosic improvisations never fail to impress. For this special occasion, the ensemble will also be joined by a drummer from Italy, bringing fresh colours, energy and unexpected improvisational twists to the music.
As always with our Sax Colossus concerts, the aim is not to simply recreate historic recordings. Instead, the music of these legends becomes a starting point for today’s musicians to explore, improvise, discover and engage in a lively musical dialogue.
