MUSIC FOR CONNOISSEURS – Concert of the 21st International Folklore Festival “POKROVO VARPAI”

For more than two decades, the International Folklore Festival Pokrovo Varpai has been an integral part of the cultural life of Vilnius – one of the most renowned ethnic music events in Europe, bringing together a large, closely connected community and promoting Lithuania and its capital on the world stage.

The traditional festival concert MUSIC FOR CONNOISSEURS, held at St. Catherine’s Church, offers a unique opportunity to experience folklore as it has been preserved and carried into the present day by diverse communities. This two-part concert features outstanding folklore ensembles from Lithuania and abroad – Armenia, Bulgaria, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Spain, Norway, Georgia, Serbia, and Ukraine – presenting musical traditions that sound as authentically today as they did centuries ago. Audiences will hear unique examples of traditional music preserved to this day, revealing the worldview, rhythms, and layers of melodic memory of different nations. It is a living dialogue with the past, allowing listeners to feel how tradition breathes today and how the voices of various cultures merge into a single, inspiring musical whole.

The festival’s distinctiveness lies in its deep respect for traditional folklore and UNESCO-protected cultural heritage. In the second part of the concert, the audience will hear Georgian polyphonic music. The ensemble Gurulebi from the Ozurgeti Cultural Centre (Guria region) will present authentic examples of Gurian folklore – a tradition in which every voice carries centuries of musical heritage.
