Florian Zeller
The Father
The Father by French novelist and playwright Florian Zeller is a moving story about the decline of memory, the loss of awareness, and how this leads to losing connection with family, loved ones, and the outside world. The protagonist, André (Vytautas Anužis), is 88 years old. Though still quite active for his age, he begins to show signs of an illness similar to Alzheimer’s. As the disease progresses, his grip on reality weakens – everyday details, his sense of space, and his understanding of the world slowly slip away. His mind blends reality with memories and images from his subconscious. Moments of clarity clash with confusion, leading to conflict with his family, his surroundings, and even his own sense of existence. André increasingly thinks about his late daughter, Élise, a painter. In his mind, she has not passed away but simply left on a journey. Élise represents freedom and independence, and her presence can be felt in every scene. Hope is tied to his memories of her and the belief that art has a deeper meaning than material life. Art, in a way, helps us control our instincts – our inner wild nature. The play also raises important questions: What truly matters in life? What should we prioritize? How do we find meaning in life and in its inevitable end?
What do we tend to forget? The painful, the uncomfortable, the things we wish hadn’t happened? Probably. Yet memory has a way of holding on to the brightest moments – perhaps because they help us keep going.

About the festival
